Learning Tasks
There are a lot of events in Aotearoa New Zealand over the few weeks, all of which are about looking at the world around us to see how we can make an impact, both as an individual affected by something and an ally to support others. We will be looking at this through the context of Aotearoa New Zealand's Women's Suffrage movement (Suffrage Day is celebrated on September 19th), conservation (Conservation Week is 2-8 September), and Daffodil Day (celebrated today!).
Starter activities run by the teacher as introduction to the three topics.
Play a Women's Suffrage Kahoot to learn more about the road that lead women to gain the right to vote in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Watch Conservation Week Video
Watch Andrew's Story - "The 1 in 3 was my mum" and Danielle's Research
Mahi Choice - Pick the topic that was most passionate to you to find an activity to complete during this extended mentor.
Women's Suffrage - Read the Key Facts about Women's Suffrage and create a timeline on how women's right to vote has developed world wide. Also identify what other barriers outside of gender are used to prevent people from voting.
Conservation Week - Watch the following to videos to learn more about conservations issues like predators or kauri dieback. Then, create a poster using Canva or on paper to help promote one of the following conservation efforts - reducing invasive predators by desexing pets, encouraging people to clean their shoes before entering a kauri forest, cleaning up rubbish around the school, creating a poster for the airport to remind people to be careful of what they bring into the country. Email or hand in any posters made to Ms Garlick (k.garlick@edgewater.school.nz) so she can print them off to put around the school during Conservation Week.
Daffodil Day - Learn more (Kurzgetsagt In a Nutshell Video), be creative (Daffodil Origami or Mindful Colouring) or unwind (Word Find).
Share what you learned or created with your classmates during the last 5-10 minutes. This is a way that you're already starting to take action. Then chat with what you can keep doing in the future to help these causes.
Teacher Notes
You can use the Kahoot to open up the dialog on the importance of voting and being an ally.
You're also welcomed to narrow down the choices if you just want to focus on one topic today.
Note for the daffodil origami, you will need yellow paper, scissors and a glue stick. The mindful colouring will need to be printed out.
