Lesson 3

Circuit Design

Learning Intention: Explore the different ways to build a circuit.

Success Criteria

5. I can set up an electrical circuit from a circuit diagram.

Learning Tasks

1. Do Now: Make sure your table group is set up for today's lesson. You all should have your notebooks and one device per pair. If you don't have enough devices, you will need to swap around your groups or borrow devices from each other. The activities don't work well on the phones, thus the need for devices.

2. These instructions are on Google Classroom for you to copy and paste into Chat GPT, then type up at least one paragraph your or your pair wrote last week in your books.

"Please give feedback grammer, clarity and depth expected for a 14-year-old to write on wire design (metal on the inside, plastic on the outside), which should discuss the requirements for a working circuit and what makes a material conductive. Here is my paragraph below, please give feedback on it.""

After Chat GPT analyzes your work, write down three things you can work on to improve your writing.

If you have time, type up the other person's paragraph for feedback.

3. Follow the link to the PhET simulation for circuits.

Working in pairs, figure out how to build a circuit where each time a bulb is added, the bulb gets dimmer.

Then, figure out how to hold a build a circuit where no matter how many bulbs you add, they still remain the same amount of brightness.

Write your any observations on the board for each type of circuit.

4. Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on types of circuits.

5. Confirm these PhET simulation observations are correct by using the equipment to build a circuit with two bulbs that are dimmer and a circuit that the two bulbs have the same brightness.

You can work in your table groups for this activity.

Homework

Email Ms Garlick the answer to the following question.

How did Ben Franklin discover electricity?
