Lesson 1
Atomic Structure Review
Learning Intention: Describe and explain the structure of an atom & use that to justify why carbon is so important.
Success Criteria
I can explain why carbon is the building block of life.
Learning Tasks
Draw what you think an atom looks like in your books.
Open the Build an Atom PhET Stimulation. Select either 'Atom' or 'Symbol.' Make sure that you tick, 'stable/unstable.' (If you selected the 'Atom' setting, make sure you to also have the 'Net Charge' and 'Mass Number' open).
Tinker with the building an atom. When you notice a trend or you learned something new about the atom, write in on your shared piece of paper.
Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on atomic structure.
Answer the following question by the two activities - "Which is the most useful element to build stuff?"
Use Build a Molecule PhET Stimulation to make chains of various elements. Of the ones that you can make chains, which ones can have other elements attached. Note that only molecules that do exist will come up with names.
Use the Moly Mods and observe the number of holes each element.
Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on covalent bonding.
