Lesson 4
Pressure and Buoyancy
This lesson sets the work that was assigned for Term 3, Week 4. August 7th, 2023 to August 11th, 2023.
Learning Intention: Explore the challenges of being an organism living in water.
Success Criteria
11. I can explain density in relation to mass and volume.
12. I can relate how the density of an object affects its ability to float.
13. I can identify the challenges of exploring and being an organism in the deep ocean.
14. I can discuss how organisms move in between the depths of the ocean.
Learning Tasks
Complete the Soda Can Experiment. When it comes to the justification, you might want to do the next activity before writing it so you have a better understanding of why you had that trend.
Using the PHET Simulator for Density, answer the following questions in the PHET Density Google Doc.
Using the PHET Simulator for Under Pressure, answer the following questions in the PHET Under Pressure Google Doc.
Read the article linked and answer the questions in the Pressure in the Ocean Google Doc.
Optional: Watch this video to see the effects of water pressure.
Read this article on the blobfish and write a summary answering why the blobfish looks so different (*cough* ugly *cough*) on land vs in water?
Watch and answer the EdPuzzle questions for Bill Nye the Science Guy: Buoyancy.
Read the article linked and answer the questions in the Fish Buoyancy Google Doc.
Work on your Extreme Life Internal.
Homework
Finish the tasks from this lesson by the end of class on Friday, August 11th.
Last teaching lesson for this topic. You are now ready to work on your internal!
Teacher Notes
These lessons are designed to be assigned by the week and are mostly independent work since my Level 2 Science course is taught alongside my Level 2 Chemistry course. They are to provide necessary background information to support students when they research their extreme environments internal. Even though this work is independent, make sure to check in with students at the following points...
These concepts might be more challenging for the students, so make sure to check in with them frequently, specially with the PHET simulators.
As a teacher, you will also need to pick up a variety of different cans of soda for Task 2.
