Lesson 1
Intro and IR
Learning Intention: Identify the functional group of an organic molecule using IR data.
Success Criteria
4. I can identify the presence and absence of functional groups from IR spectra.
Learning Tasks
Do Now - Week 5 Check-In. Random question: Who is your favourite fictional family?
Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on spec internal and IR spectra.
Play IR Spectra Gimkit
Work on identifying the functional groups in the Combination Questions Packet.
Homework
Identify the functional groups in the Combination Questions.
Teacher Notes
Make sure when showing them the different IR spectra's functional groups to show them side by side so they can see the minor differences between amide vs carboxylic acids, amine vs alcohol, alcohol vs carboxylic acids, amides vs amines.
Also mention that it is difficult to see alkenes and haloalkanes on IR, so there will be different ways they identify that. Alkenes vs alkanes, I will give them either a molecular or empirical formula. Haloalkanes they will use mass spec.
Make sure to also stress that it's important not only to write what is there, but also what is not there to justify the functional group present.
