Lesson 4
Shapes
Learning Intention: Determine the shapes of larger molecules.
Success Criteria
3. I can draw Lewis diagrams and name the shape of the molecule.
A = Some
M = All
Learning Tasks
Note, no Do Now for this lesson because it was combined with Lesson 3 as a workshop during senior assessment week.
Open up the PHET Molecule Shapes Simulation, tick to show Electron Geometry, Molecular Geomerty, Lone Pairs and Bond Angles. Then tinker with adding single bonds, lone pairs, double bonds and triple bonds. Each time you learn something new or recall something from last year, write it Ms Garlick's piece of paper to show on the screen.
Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on shapes. (Blank Summary table from GZ Science)
Mahi Choice
sciPAD - Shapes of Molecules (pages 35-38)*
No Brain Too Small Shapes and Polarity Collated Questions (just skip the polarity write up, we'll cover that next week.)
*Note the sciPAD has you also write out the electron configuration and link that into your answer. This is only there to help explain what is occuring, this will not be on the assessment.
Homework
sciPAD or NBTS Collated Questions, whatever you need to do to feel confident
This lesson took place on Friday, September 13th, 2024, Term 3, Week 8, which is when this page was last updated.
Teacher Notes
Lewis Structure cards are to be printed double sided on card. It is recommended to use a different colour of card for each set so that way you can tell which set is which. Note these are only for the Level 2 simple molecules.
