Lesson 3
Isomers Intro
Learning Intention: Describe what are structural isomers.
Success Criteria
3. I can identify structural isomers from a molecular formula from information on the properties of the molecule.
Learning Tasks
Note that Day 1 of this lesson was a relief lesson. Ms Garlick was away sick. Students were given the option of continuing to work on Lesson 2 or starting Lesson 3.
Pre-Learning - Work on the Level 2 SciPad work on isomers.
Do Now (Day 2) - Complete the Week 3 Check-In. Random Question: Last week was teacher appreciation week, who is a teacher that you really appreciate (outside of Ms Garlick) and why?
Example and Non-Example Activity. The first example of the hint to the vocab word Ms Garlick wants you to identify is butan-1-ol. From the list below, decide which are also examples and which are not examples. Aka, which would you group with butan-1-ol and which would you not.
butan-2-ol, butan-1-amine, butanone, 2-methyl propan-1-ol, 2-methyl propan-2-ol, butanal, 2-methyl propane
Copy down the notes on structural isomers.
Find the 5 structural isomers of C6H14.
Play Kahoot to check your understanding - Easy Isomer Version and Hard Isomer Version.
