Lesson 6
Shapes
Learning Intention: Evaluate what causes molecular shape.
Success Criteria
10. I can explain the shape of simple molecules based on electron pairs and regions of repulsion from a Lewis structure.
Learning Tasks
Note, no Do Now for this lesson because it was combined with Lesson 5 as a workshop during senior assessment week.
Open up the PHET Molecule Shapes Simulation, tick to show Electron Geometry, Molecular Geomerty, Lone Pairs and Bond Angles. Then tinker with adding single bonds, lone pairs, double bonds and triple bonds. Each time you learn something new, write it Ms Garlick's piece of paper to show on the screen.
Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on molecular shape.

Teacher Notes
Educational scientific research suggests that doing some pre-learning before the teaching helps support learning when the teacher is explaining things, so giving that a try.
Students aren't expected to complete all those SciPad pages before the notes and don't need to finish all the SciPad pages after. It's there to allow them to do some pre-learning and check their understanding. They can always finish off those pages later in the year closer to the exam as review.
