Lesson 4
Part A
Learning Intention: Create a dilution method and justify it.
Success Criteria
4. I can identify when a dilatation of a stock sample is required and process an appropriate dilution factor that allows for a reliable volume to be used.
5. I can justify how a selected volume improves the reliability of the data.
Learning Tasks
Do Now (Day 1) - Using a plastic bulb pipette, add 1 mL of undiluted purified sour cream and pheno into a beaker. Then add 1 mL of 0.1 M NaOH until the solution turns pink to get a rough idea of the ratio needed to neutralize the lactic acid in the sour cream.
Copy down the notes for Ms Garlick's Example for Part A. Since the titration assessment in broken up into 4 parts, there will be three versions that you will be working on simultaneously, teaching (yellow), practice (purple), actual (white that Ms Garlick will hold onto).
Practice working on Part A Assessment Style Questions (Answers) and Extra Task A Exercises (Answers). If your ratio was different to Ms Garlick, you can use those values as a practice calculation. (Note that Ms Garlick is trying to save paper, so she is not printing out these practice questions. Please write them on refill.)
Do Now (Day 2) - Complete the Week 7 Check In. Random Question: If you were on death row, what would you want your final meal to be?
Copy down the notes for the excellence section of Part A and the answer for Part A Practice Question 1.
Practice working on Part A Assessment Style Questions (Answers) and Extra Task A Exercises (Answers).
Day 3 - Complete the Part A Practice Assessment.
Day 4 - Copy down the general feedback.
Day 5 - Complete the Part A section of the Titration Internal Assessment.
This lesson was used starting Thursday, June 6th, 2024, Term 2 Week 6 until Thursday, June 20th, 2024. Term 2, Week 8. The former is when it was last updated.
Teacher Notes
Part A Teaching Version used 1M HCl that was labelled as "Undiluted Purified Household Sour Cream" and 0.1 M NaOH.
Part A Practice Version used 1M HCl that was labelled as "Undiluted Purified Household Buttermilk" and 0.15 M NaOH.
