Lesson 2
Atomic Structure
Learning Intention: Describe and explain the structure of an atom.
Success Criteria
2. I can describe the structure of the atom.
3. I can identify the charges of the components of the atom.
4. I can explain what makes up atomic mass.
5. I can explain what defines something as an element.
6. I can explain why atoms need neutrons.
Learning Tasks
Do Now - Draw what you think an atom looks like in your books.
Open the Build an Atom PhET Stimulation. Select either 'Atom' or 'Symbol.' Make sure that you tick, 'stable/unstable.' (If you selected the 'Atom' setting, make sure you to also have the 'Net Charge' and 'Mass Number' open).
Tinker with the building an atom. When you notice a trend or you learned something new about the atom, come up to the board and write down your observation. (9SL's observations)
Copy down Ms Garlick's notes on atomic structure.
Continue using the Build an Atom PhET Stimulation, but now selected one of the games.
Watch the Ted Ed - The 2,400 Year Search for the Atom and identify which the science features that we talked about in our last topics are present in this story. (Reminder, science features are - observing new patterns and/or interactions, linking new evidence to existing models, theories, and/or ideas to strengthen understanding, changing of science ideas in response to new evidence, development of new science ideas in response to different perspectives, competition, societal and culture factors, development of new technology, response to human needs, collaboration, curiosity.)
Homework
Email Ms Garlick the answer to the following question.
Who (2 people) came up with the first idea of the atom and when did that happen?
