Lesson 3
Electron Arrangement
Learning Intention: Add to your knowledge on atomic structure.
Success Criteria
7. I can draw the electron arrangement of an atom.
8. I can identify the trends in the periodic table.
Learning Tasks
Do Now - Working in pairs, cut out the cards you'll need for later in this activity.
Working in pairs, group the first 20 elements into 4 groups. What is the pattern that you notice?
2 groups will have 2 cards each
2 groups will have 8 cards each
Working in pairs, group the first 20 elements into 8 groups. What is the pattern that you notice?
1 group will have 4 cards
2 groups will have 3 cards each
5 groups will have 2 cards each
Glue the periodic table with the first 20 elements and then copy down the notes Ms Garlick makes. (Note 1 - Periodic Table Trends, Note 2 - Example Atomic Structure with Electron Arrangement).
Last Person Standing - Ms Garlick is going to ask you a question (e.g. How many neutrons does this atom have? What is the electron configuration? etc). Answer your question on the Show Me Boards. You have two chances before you are eliminated from the game and the last person standing wins. Start by standing on your chairs. If you are incorrect, you need to stand on the floor. If you're incorrect for a second time, you sit down and you're out.
Homework
Email Ms Garlick the answer to the following question.
Which New Zealand scientist contributed to the structure of the atom?
