Lesson 6
Renting
Learning Intention: Explore the costs of moving out of home.
Success Criteria
8. I can estimate my rent costs.
Do Now
List the pros and cons of each living situation (page 16).
Finding a flat with multiple bedrooms and then find flatmates to fill the extra bedrooms (aka head tenant).
Finding a flat through a flatmate wanted ad (aka you move into an existing flatting group)
Living in a one-bedroom flat or studio apartment.
After the notes, circle which living situation you want to have.
Learning Tasks
Play "The Price is Right" to learn about the costs of moving out of home. Write down your guesses on page 19.
Use Trade Me to find a place to live and use that information to complete the 'My Place' Worksheet.
Note that if you're living alone or want to be a head tenant you are searching under "rentals." If you want to join a flat, you are searching under "flatmate wanted." You should not be searching under property because you are not looking to buy a place.
Once you have completed the 'My Place' worksheet, add the rent cost to your 'My Budget' on page 35.
Depending on the place you have selected, add the utilities to page 36.
Water = $1224/year (If water is included in your rent, you can just put down $0.)
Power = $2287/year (If power is included in your rent, you can just put down $0.)
Internet = $80/month (If internet is included in your rent, put down $0. If you have flatmates, you can divide the internet by the number of flatmates.)
Cell Phone - Look up your current provider and find the plan that works for you.
If you have finished early, complete the 'My Place' extension work on page 18.
Teacher Notes
Do Now - here are the class notes so you have an idea of the areas that I want to make sure are discussed. It is mainly there as a way to get students to think about different living situations.
For Task 1, make sure you show them the different areas of TradeMe so they're looking in the right places, aka how to search for rentals and flatmate wanted and to set location. Students might accidentally find themselves looking at property to buy because that's the default.
